Insight

A good job advertisement tells applicants what they would do, which skills they need and what the working terms are. Simply seeking a proactive team player for a growing company says little about any of this. Before writing, agree on the responsibilities, objectives and employment terms. You can then describe them in concrete language.

Below is an adaptable job advertisement template for an account manager. Complete and check the information in square brackets. Adapt the rest of the text to the actual role before publication.

Account manager to develop existing business relationships

We are looking for an account manager to join [company name]. We provide [specific service or product] to businesses in [customer group]. You will manage an assigned group of existing business customers. You will identify their needs, agree next steps and make sure our colleagues know what we have promised each customer.

The role suits someone who enjoys building lasting customer relationships and follows through on commitments, including when a solution needs input from several people. The focus is on developing existing accounts. [Describe any new business responsibilities separately, including how much of the role they represent.]

What will you do in this role?

You will prepare for customer meetings, meet customers and record agreed follow-up actions. Together with the customer and our team, you will identify service needs. You will prepare proposals [describe your responsibilities and who approves pricing] and make sure customers receive answers to their questions.

You will work with the following teams or colleagues: [teams or job titles]. Your manager will be [job title], and you will receive support with your work [describe the agreed support]. [Explain how much travel or how many customer visits the role involves.] You will keep customer records up to date in our system [system name or type].

What will we expect of you in the first 6–12 months?

During your first few months, you will learn about our services and customers and take responsibility for the agreed accounts. [Job title] will oversee your induction, which includes [agreed induction stages]. After reviewing the starting position, we will agree account objectives [state when and with whom].

In your first 6–12 months, we will expect you to [describe the specific outcomes and timescale agreed for the role]. We will review progress [explain how and how often objectives will be discussed]. To help you reach these goals, you will receive [describe the agreed support and available resources].

What skills and experience do you need?

You have experience working with business customers. You can ask clarifying questions, summarise the key points and agree who will do what next. You can give an example of how you have worked with others to handle a customer issue.

The role requires [language and its actual use at work] and [another essential skill]. [If a qualification is essential, name it and explain its connection to the work.]

We value [for example, relevant sector knowledge], but you can apply without it. [Explain what the employer is prepared to teach.] We do not expect you to know all our services before joining.

What are the employment terms and working arrangements?

The employment type is [type of employment] and the working hours are [agreed working hours]. The workplace is in [location and office]. Our agreed arrangement for remote and office work is [specific arrangement]. The start date is [date or by agreement].

Pay: [confirmed pay range or another clear description of how pay is determined]. Any variable component: [describe the basis and conditions, or remove this line]. Other benefits include [confirmed benefits only].

The role also involves [a real challenge or constraint]. We will explain this further at interview so you can assess whether the position suits you.

How to apply

Submit your application through [application channel] by [date and time]. Include [required application information]. Briefly describe a customer situation where you helped move things forward. Leave out customer names and confidential information.

The recruitment process will run as follows: [stages and the job titles of those involved]. We will let you know about next steps [agreed date and channel]. [Add the employer-approved job title of the person answering enquiries, their public contact method and contact hours.] Information about how application data is handled is available here: [recruitment privacy information].

Why is the template structured this way?

The heading identifies the role and its focus. An account manager might spend almost all their time finding new customers at one company and managing existing accounts at another. Explain that difference early. If both are part of the role, readers should not have to guess their relative importance.

The job description covers practical activities: preparing for meetings, understanding customer needs, making proposals and following up. Applicants can compare these tasks with their experience. The writer also needs to check where responsibility ends. Can the employee decide on pricing, or do they prepare a proposal for someone else to approve? The word “independent” does not explain this.

Separate essential skills from things that can be learned on the job. If employees can learn about the sector during induction, sector knowledge need not be a mandatory requirement. Only promise an induction programme that has an assigned owner and time allocated to it.

Employment terms and application instructions are easy to find in their own sections. An unfilled placeholder means information is still missing. Resolve it before finalising the advert.

Adapt the wording to your role

Finalise the job advertisement together with the future manager. Check that responsibilities reflect everyday work, the skills required are necessary and employment terms have been agreed. Then ask a colleague unfamiliar with the role to describe in their own words what job the advert is about. Revise any passages that give the wrong impression.

Adapt the template to your role, fill in all missing information and remove the instructions before publication. Check the application link and read the advert on a phone. A good job advertisement tells applicants what to expect from the role and how to apply.
