Headhunting or job advertising: which one should you choose?

When is job advertising enough, and when do you need a headhunter? The answer depends on whether the right people are actively looking.

A difficult hire often starts in exactly the same way as an easy one. Write a job advert, choose the channels, publish it and wait.

That works when the right people are already looking for a new job. When they are not, more visibility does not solve the real problem.

The choice between headhunting and job advertising comes down to two questions: where are the people you need, and what would make them pay attention to a job advert?

Are the right people looking for a new role?

If relevant candidates are searching for a new role, recruitment marketing may be enough. The challenge is to present the opportunity clearly, reach the right audience and run an application process that respects people's time.

Use a headhunter when the strongest candidates are unlikely to apply on their own. They may be happy in their current role, not actively following the job market or willing to talk only when someone approaches them with a credible opportunity.

At reQruitz, Head Hunting includes recruitment marketing. This means the search can reach active applicants through a targeted campaign while also mapping and contacting passive candidates. Standalone Recruitment Marketing focuses on people who are already looking for a new job.

When job advertising is the right choice

Job advertising works best when the people you need are actively looking and can quickly see that the role fits their background.

Even then, the advert has to earn their interest. It should explain what the person will be responsible for, why the role matters and what makes the opportunity worth considering. A targeted recruitment campaign then takes that message to the channels where the right applicants spend time.

Recruitment Marketing is likely to be enough when:

  • suitable people regularly apply for comparable roles
  • you know which channels will reach the right people
  • the main problem is how the role is presented or how visible it is
  • your team can review applications and make decisions without unnecessary delay.

Posting a vacancy is only one part of the process. The message, targeting and communication with candidates all need to work together. See how reQruitz approaches Recruitment Marketing.

When to use a headhunter

Headhunting becomes relevant when you cannot rely on whoever happens to see the advert.

This is common when the pool of suitable candidates is small. A technical specialist, experienced commercial leader or business-critical manager may be open to the right move without having visited a job board for years.

A headhunter maps the market, identifies people who fit the role and starts the conversation directly. At reQruitz, recruitment marketing runs alongside that work so active applicants are not overlooked.

Consider Head Hunting when the expertise is scarce, the market is difficult to map, the role is confidential or the cost of leaving it open is significant. Read more about reQruitz Head Hunting.

A good advert cannot reach someone who is not looking for a new job

A job advert can be excellent and still attract the wrong candidates. That does not always mean the advert has failed. It may mean the people you want are outside the active job market.

At that point, rewriting the advert again is unlikely to change much. First find out whether the right audience can realistically be reached through advertising.

Four questions before choosing the right approach

Ask these before deciding between headhunting and job advertising:

  1. How have comparable roles previously attracted suitable applicants?
  2. Do you understand the talent market, or does it need to be mapped first?
  3. Is the job advert written to interest someone who is satisfied in their current role?
  4. Do you need personal or confidential outreach as well as public visibility?

If the right approach is still unclear, we are happy to look at the role and market with you. Together, we can decide which service is most likely to deliver the result you need.
